Thunder Return To Action With Exhibition Win

Thunder Return To Action With Exhibition Win

EDMONTON, AB – The CUE Thunder Men's Soccer team returned to action and opened their exhibition schedule with a 2-0 win over the Southwest United U17 Boys Saturday afternoon.

The first half was filled with back and forth action as both teams played each other tight. SW United U17 was lead by goalie Sebastian Weidner, who made some timely saves to keep things level at 0-0. The second half saw a more spirited effort from the Thunder as Pawel Pilat opened the scoring for the Thunder in the 55th minute. The Thunder kept their foot on the gas and kept the pressure on throughout the half, but Weidner kept it a one goal game through most of the second half. However, Jayden Munguia was able to break through in the 74th minute to add an insurance goal, making it 2-0 for the Thunder which was also the final scoreline.

After the game, Thunder Head Coach Hussein Shabdi said he liked the way the Thunder adjusted in the second half but sees room for improvement: "We played well. The boys adjusted well in the second half; their shape was better and overall played better in the second half but we still have some work to do."

Third year Thunder keeper Scott Hornbeck also liked what he saw from his side from sees room for growth: "A long way to go, but this is a good place to start. Hopefully we'll keep getting better from here."

The Thunder continue their exhibition schedule next Saturday, September 4, as they welcome The King's University Eagles.
