EDMONTON, AB – The Concordia University of Edmonton (CUE) Thunder welcomed the Lakeland Rustlers in Friday night action to open up their home and home series. Lakeland jumped out to a huge lead thanks for a strong first quarter, but the Thunder clawed their way back into it to tie it late. However, the Rustlers scored a buzzer beater just before time expired to take this one 78-76.
The first quarter was all Lakeland as they jumped out to a large lead early, and maintained control throughout the period as they held a 23-10 lead. The Rustlers kept the momentum going as their offense stretched their lead even further in the second quarter, leading the game 44-27 at the half. The second half was a different story, however, as the Thunder stepped up to start their comeback, cutting the Rustlers lead to single digits. Lakeland took a 67-60 lead into the fourth quarter. The Thunder again cut into the Rustlers lead as they tied the game, and eventually took a lead late in the fourth quarter. The Thunder and Rustlers exchanged leads throughout the last part of the fourth quarter, before entering the last minute tied. After some strong defensive play, the Rustlers won the game on a buzzer beater to take this one 78-76.
The Thunder and Rustlers meet again tomorrow night at Lakeland. Concordia will be looking to win on the road to split the weekend series.
