EDMONTON, AB - The Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder (2-8-1-1) played host to cross-town rival MacEwan University Griffins (9-2-1) on Saturday night, with the Griffins coming away with a 7-3 victory on the back of a 5-goal explosion in the 2nd period.

The Thunder opened the scoring early in the 1st period with a goal by #9 Matt Benko (assisted by Adam Wheeldon and Phil Dillion) to go up 1-0 over the Griffins. Despite being outshot 10-8 in the period, the Thunder maintained control in the neutral zone and took the lead into the locker room at the intermission.

The 2nd period saw a lot of back and forth action at both ends of the rink to start off, but the first place Griffins took control in the latter half with a 5 goal outburst, 4 of which came during a 7-minute stretch. The Thunder tried to mount the late rally with a single goal by Ian Maclellan in the period, and trailed 5-2 at the break.

The Griffins picked up where they left off in the 3rd period with two more goals on their way to a 7-3 win over the Thunder, placing them at the top of the ACAC standings. All 10 goals scored between both teams saw 10 different goal scorers. 2nd year defense Ben Sowa was a bright spot for the Thunder, notching 2 assists on the night.

The Kahunaverse Sport Group Players of the Game for the visiting MacEwan University Griffins was #25 Tyler Morrison and for the Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder #6 Ben Sowa.

Next up for the Thunder will be a home-and-home series against the Portage College Voyageurs, where they will wrap up the Fall semester on Saturday November 24 at the Clareview Arena, puck drop at 7:00 PM.
