Edmonton, AB – The Concordia Thunder Hosted last year's ACAC champions MacEwan Griffins. Today was a special pre-season game as Concordia introduced two-time board chair Mike Wade with a jersey presentation and ceremonial puck drop as a parting gift. Thank you Mike for all that you've done for Concordia, we look forward to having you represent your Concordia Thunder jersey at any Concordia hosted athletic event.
Grant MacEwan beat the Thunder 5-2, and Concordia's Garrett Storms faced 44 shots and made some unbelievable saves to keep the Thunder at arms-reach of a comeback. The Griffin's offensive power was a little too much for the Thunder to handle, as their puck circulation in the attacking zone is what ultimately made the difference.
After the first two periods Concordia was down four and it seemed as though Concordia was half a stride behind the Griffins and the ice was a little tilted towards the Thunder's end. A couple power play opportunities would give the Thunder some much needed momentum, but the Griffins, Ryan Larochelle was sturdy between the pipes.
The Thunder opened up the 3rd with an early goal and a mid-period goal to cut the lead in half. As the clock was winding down, Concordia pulled their goalie and the Griffins buried a late 3rd period empty net goal just as Concordia was applying enough pressure to keep the fans on the edge of their seat.
