PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE, MB – A rough first game of the day for each of the Thunder men's and women's curling teams could have derailed all playoff hopes, but a strong finish in the evening has both teams eyeing up a playoff berth at the 2020 CCAA Curling Canada National Championships.
The Thunder women's team (4-1) opened up Draw #7 vs ACAC Champion Augustana Vikings (2-3), and were in tough right from the start. The Vikings jumped out to an 11-0 lead after the first 3 ends on their way to a 15-1 drubbing, handing the Thunder their first loss of the championship.
In Draw #9, the Thunder would rebound nicely against the Sault College Cougars (1-4) with a 6-3 win to move into a tie for first place.
The Thunder women's team will open up Draw #12 on Saturday morning vs the Humber Hawks (3-2; OCAA).
On the men's side of the championships, the Thunder (3-2) would suffer a similar fate to the women in their first draw of the day against the undefeated Fanshawe Falcons (5-0; OCAA) by dropping a lopsided 10-2 decision.
Draw #10 provided the remedy for recovery as the Thunder ran away with a 10-3 win over the Confederation College Thunderhawks (0-5; OCAA). With this win, the Thunder put themselves in great position to secure their playoff hopes for Saturday.
The Thunder men's team will open up Draw #11 on Saturday morning vs ACAC Champion SAIT Trojans (2-3).
