Red Deer, AB (March 3, 2020) – The Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) is pleased to announce Evan Van Amsterdam of the Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder has been selected as the 2019-20 ACAC Male Curler of the Year.
Coming off of an impressive 2018-19 campaign that saw the Thunder men's curling team win the 2019 CCAA gold medal, Evan was able to lead the Thunder to an impressive 9-3 record and would finish first overall heading into the ACAC Conference Championships.
Director of Athletics and Recreation, Joel Mrak, praised the talented 4th-year Business Management skip stating, "The level of respect teammates and peers have for Evan when he steps on to the ice and takes command is a reflection of his work ethic and leadership. Evan has had a major impact on the success of the Thunder curling program and it has been an absolute pleasure to watch him excel over the past four years. Evan is very deserving of this recognition and we look forward to supporting his continued success in our curling program."
Despite being upset by the NAIT Ooks (8-7) in the semi-finals, Evan was able to rally his team past the Lakeland Rustlers (8-3) to win the ACAC bronze medal. The Thunder will represent the ACAC at the CCAA Curling Championships being held on March 13-17, 2020 in Portage la Prairie, MB.
This prestigious award was presented to Evan Van Amsterdam at the 2020 ACAC Curling Championship held on February 28-March 1, 2020 at Red Deer College.
