EDMONTON, AB (February 19, 2020) – The Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) is proud to announce Kevin MacAlpine of the Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder has been named the 2019-20 ACAC Badminton Coach of the Year (COY).
Kevin is in his 11th season as head coach of the Concordia Thunder Badminton program. This is Kevin's fifth ACAC COY award, having been so honoured in 2011, 2016, 2017 and 2019. Kevin was also recognized as the CCAA Badminton Coach of the Year in 2011 and 2017.
The Concordia Thunder is currently ranked first nationally and finished the 2019-20 ACAC regular season in first place with 497 points. The Thunder will look to claim back to back ACAC Championship titles and for a third straight year will be contenders for a national championship banner.
Director of Athletics and Recreation, Joel Mrak, credits Coach MacAlpine's dedication to the student-athletes as a result of the academic and on-court success of the Thunder Badminton program year in and year out, "Kevin is one of the most passionate and strong advocates for badminton in the ACAC and has excelled in building one of the premier badminton programs in our conference as our head coach. His program over the years has been characterized for having strong academic students, national championship contenders, and above else, high-quality individuals to represent our institution. This recognition is very much deserved, and would like to congratulate Coach MacAlpine on his successes."
This prestigious award was presented to Kevin MacAlpine at the 2019-2020 ACAC Badminton Championship banquet held on February 22, 2020, at NAIT Campus.
