EDMONTON, AB – The Concordia University of Edmonton Department of Athletics & Recreation highlights Day 2 of the Thunder’s 11 Days of Giving campaign, as the student-athletes and teams have come together during this holiday season to give back to our community.
The Men’s Hockey team partnered with the Bissell Centre for a donation drive to help provide clothing to those Edmontonians that need it most this winter. The Bissell Centre’s mission is “Working with communities, we empower people to move from poverty to cultural, social and economic prosperity” and is something that resonated with a number of the Thunder athletes. Hockey team captain, Matt Benko, had this to say on why the team selected the Bissell Centre to support: “As a group we decided this was an initiative that would be beneficial to the community. With the cold winter months approaching it is important to give back and do what we can to ensure warmth and clothing is accessible to those in need.”. Brother and teammate Tyler Benko added “Through this initiative we are still able to contribute in a positive way while safely doing so during COVID-19 because of the Bissell Centre’s contactless drop-off station. We hope this provides hope for people in the community during these trying times.”.
The men’s hockey team started to collect new and gently used clothing items from friends, family and other connections in the community to fill a truck box full of donations for the Bissell Centre, and were able to drop the items off at their conveniently located South Side Drop Off Centre (located at 5120 - 122 Street in Edmonton).
Head Coach Joey Bouchard felt that this experience has brought a lot of perspective to the team, saying “As a team, we felt that this contribution would provide the most benefit to the vulnerable populations in our community. Our student athletes take pride in serving as ambassadors and we take time to reflect and recognize upon our own privilege. This experience has been humbling for our group and was a gratifying way to demonstrate selflessness and generosity.”. Captain Benko agreed, stating “As student-athletes we are privileged and this is something that can connect us to the community.”.
